Last week Fred Frith and I did a masterclass on film and music at Goldsmiths College, linked to my retrospective at the BFI. After some deliberation I decided to use PLAY – a short film I had made when I was about nineteen – whose enforced silence (having long since lost the original live sound-recording in an endless sequence of house moves) seemed to invite the possibility of a new score. It was pure joy to sit on a platform with Tilda again the other night. The digitally re-mastered ORLANDO looked and sounded fully present, with the colours as vibrant as they were originally intended to be.
It was a wild night on the Southbank in London. There was something in the air that felt, perhaps, close to the edginess of those participating in the first broadcast of live television, or one of the earliest projections of film with sound.
